World Diabetes Day, 14 November 2009

World Diabetes Day raises global awareness of diabetes - its escalating rates around the world and how to prevent the illness in most cases. Started by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO, the Day is celebrated on 14 November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin in 1922, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients.

WHO estimates that more than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes, according to 2005 figures. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries.

Deadlines for submissions:
CoNGO members: 8 October 2009

The form is available here.

The format of that online submission form was designed with a view to capturing the diversity of opinions of civil society organisations and other entities on subjects to be discussed during the New York Component. It is intended to provide an opportunity for both CoNGO members and non-members based in the regions to participate in shaping the debates of CSDF 2009.

World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2009

World Mental Health Day on 10 October raises public awareness about mental health issues. The Day promotes more open discussion of illnesses, and investments in prevention and treatment services. WHO statistics for 2002 show that 154 million people globally suffer from depression, only one form of mental illness.

Mental, neurological and behavioural disorders are common in all countries around the world, causing immense suffering and staggering economic and social costs. People with disorders are often subjected to social isolation, poor quality of life and higher death rates.
